Sew Excited!

April 25, 2012

Alright, I'm jumping back on.  I'm gonna do this.

For Christmas I got a sewing machine from my in-laws.  I have all these ideas of things I wanna make, but....I just wanna be Vera Wang already!  To hell with patterns and measuring.  Hehe, I'm kidding.

Since Junior was born I barely have time to brush my teeth and dress myself each day, most less get my Martha on.  BUT TODAY I took advantage of his long "3 month growth spurt naps" and played my hand at appliqueing.  No such beginner's luck today.  I mean, it's not totally throw-away-worthy, but I'll wait a bit before opening my Etsy shop. :P

The Dutchies celebrate Queen's Day each April 30th.  It's a mad party.  Everyone goes out and...paints the town orange!  Orange is the national color, and no one stops at just sporting an orange tee.   So, naturally, GQ Junior has to have a special orange outfit.  By the way, let me just say how EXCITED I am about dressing him for all of his first year's holidays!  How fun!  Alright, so I wanted to make him one of those super cute little man tie onesies.  And in orange, of course.  Now, I have every color fabric known to man.  Obviously except orange.

Guess what I see laying in the Mount Everest of laundry on my bed?

The husband's ORANGE gingham American Eagle boxers.  Bingo!

Yeah.  I did.  I cut those bad boys up.

Drew out a pattern on some computer paper.

Ironed on some Under Wonder....

Peeled off the sticky paper and applied the tie pieces to the onesie.....

And stitched it up using the button hole setting on my machine.

And THIS is how it turned out.

Far from perfect, but considering it was my first ever, I'm gonna go ahead and give myself a back pat.  I didn't have, therefore use, any fabric stabiliser and so my applique bunched up a bit.  Boo.  I also didn't do such  a fabulous job on the stitching, but whateva'!  And now Jr. has a Queen's Day outfit! :)

Speaking of Junior....this is what the kids were doing while I got my sew on....

Ignore the mess going on in Jr.'s daytime bed- it's in the living room and catches all kinds of things laying around...

Two hours later it was time for nap #2.  I decided to get some more use out of those boxers, so.....

A "C" cut out of a cereal bar box.

Ironing Wonder Under to the....boxer material ;)

Tracing my backwards "C' to the paper side of the Wonder Under.

Cutting out my "C"

Using a damp cloth to apply the applique to the onesie

Ironing on my applique

Using a straight stitch to finish the applique up

Aaaaaaaaaand the finished product! :)

Ok, now I have 100+ more ideas and I need to get the move on!
